Day one of the year, and the first full day in the UK.

This morning we started with a walk into Green Park and then down Piccadilly to Trafalgar Square.

I wanted to pat the lion’s paw at the base of Nelson’s column but it was fenced off because of the giant video screen placed there for New Year’s Eve (by the way, Mark made it to 10pm and I went through to 11:15 – hey, we’d just had a 23 hour flight!).

St Martin in the Fields. Don’t let the blue sky fool you, it was three degrees.

We went to a great exhibition of photographs at the National Portrait Gallery called ‘From Beatles to Bowie’ which documented ‘Swinging London’ in the 1960s. Then we walked up Charing Cross Road to Oxford Street where we bought new mobile phones and went to the department stores. Mark bought a nice pair of pants at House of Fraser. We made our way back through Mayfair to the hotel.

The Athenaeum’s Vertical Garden.

Our front door.

At 4:30 we had an Afternoon Tea – champagne, sandwiches, scones, cakes, crumpets, tea…there was no need for dinner.

Watched the end of Dr Who and then Mastermind. Now it’s time for QI with Stephen Fry.
