Well here we are back in London. It’s Christmas Eve. We took a train from Bath to London and are now at our Christmas camping grounds, The Athenaeum Hotel in Mayfair. When we arrived we discovered that our Park View Room had obscured views because of the scaffolding they had erected for a refurbishment of the exterior of the hotel:
When I phoned down to reception to see if there were any other options available, we were shown an apartment in a group of adjacent mansion houses owned by the hotel. We were upgraded to one of these apartments – much bigger, beautifully decorated, with a kitchen, sitting/dining room and, most importantly for Mark, a washing machine!
Satisfied with this, we then made our way to the Garden Room for our Laduree Afternoon tea – pink Laduree champagne, sandwiches (smoked salmon, turkey, egg, cucumber, ham), scones, jam and cream, Laduree macaroons and cakes, Lauduree tea and toasted crumpets!
We took a walk down to the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland Christmas Fair with German Christmas Market.
I finally got my mulled wine! No room for German Sausages though after all that afternoon tea.
As for the last few days – we drove back through some more Cotswold villages on our way to Bath on Monday.
Spent the afternoon touring Bath’s main sights including the ancient Roman Baths, Bath Abbey, the Circus and the Royal Crescent.
Yesterday we drove to Stonehenge and then went to Salisbury where we saw the cathedral (England’s tallest spire) and the town.
That night we went to the Theatre Royal and saw a pantomime – Jack and the Beanstalk. It was absolutely hilarious – we had so much fun! I think it was our favourite UK theatre experience.
Mark is happily doing washing. We have just had dinner at the hotel restaurant (I had the duck and Mark had the lamb shank) and are now watching our annual Christmas Eve “Muppet Christmas Carol”.
