When we left Kumeroa we drove to Napier on the east coast of the North Island in the Hawkes Bay region. Napier was devastated by an earthquake in 1931 and was rebuilt in the Art Deco style. It is now regarded as the best and most complete collection of small scale Art Deco architecture in the world.

Every year they have an Art Deco weekend festival.

We stayed in a lovely two storey apartment on Marine Parade overlooking the water.

We spent time going to wineries, exploring the town on the self-guided Art Deco walk, and walking along the beach.

There is a nice lookout at the top of the bluff. We had very good food at the County Hotel restaurant but service wasn’t that great.

At the Art Deco Shop I bought two large hard cover books about the adventures of Orlando the Marmalade Cat.

Got some good photos – I had to use Mark’s shoulder as a tripod for this one.
